IV
Three months later, the evening was beautiful and John found Ianto practicing on the piano. He stood silently for a while listening Ianto playing the well known Beethoven’s Piano sonata in C minor melody. Soon the young man stopped and started a new melody. This piece started off hopeful and naively optimistic, but took a turn when the minor chords revealed a deeper truth. The song softly cried before the persistent notes and strong chords interrupted with a resentful yearning. It ended with a calm acceptance. John hadn’t heard it before and as he listened to it he suddenly realised tears were running down his face.
“What is this, Ianto?” John asked wiping the tears from his face. The pianist flinched when he heard John talking to him.
“Haven’t titled yet.” He said indifferently and his friend came closer and leaned on the piano, looking down at him, straight in the eyes. John drew away from the piano, his hands flaring in the air.
“You wrote this? And when exactly were you going to tell me?”
Ianto stared at his hands and notes, the same sad desperation from before coming back.
“It’s just for me, John. You didn’t need to know.” Ianto explained plaintively almost silently begging John to understand with no added questions. Of course it was John he was talking with so his wish was not heard.
“But this is wonderful Ianto. See?” He asked pointing at his eyes. “I’m crying! Last time I cried was… hey! I don’t remember when was the last time I cried! This was brilliant! Fantastic! You cannot tell me you’re keeping it for your self Ianto. That’s selfish!”
“Don’t you dare call me selfish!” Ianto got up and started walking on the wooden floor agitated. He ran his fingers through his hair. He needed a haircut. The odd thought would have made him laugh if he wasn’t already ready to cry.
John looked at him startled by the angry gale.
“Ianto, what’s wrong? Why don’t you tell me?” Ianto turned around; the pained expression on the young face shook John’s soul.
“I am at a loss, John. I never knew… I never imagined it would hurt this much.” Ianto slid down to the floor, back against the wall; he pulled his knees up and wrapped his arms around his legs. He bowed his head and let it rest on his knees.
Squatting in front of him, John out his left hand on Ianto’s neck and squeezed it gently.
“Can’t you tell me?” He asked the younger man.
“No, I can’t.”
“That’s okay, it’s okay Ianto. I’m here for you. It’s okay.” John sat down and pulled Ianto in his arms, same way a father would hold his child.
Ianto tried to resist but finally gave in. Comfort. He had missed it. He returned the hug and breathed deeply. Some time later, Ianto pulled away and looked at John.
“Thanks John.”
“Don’t mention it.” John got up as well. “Ianto, why didn’t you go to Werth’s wedding? It’s today, wasn’t it?”
“Yes.” Ianto’s body stiffened but his face was calm and peaceful. “If I had gone I wouldn’t have wanted to leave and…” Ianto hesitated. “And I’m not ready to see… Lisa yet.”
“Alright, I understand.”
Ianto didn’t know if John had believed him or not and he didn’t care. He was too tired to care.
“Goodnight, John.” He went to his room and closed the door behind him. He fell on the bed fully dressed, turned around to his side and his body took a fetal position. He was not going to think about Jack Harkness. Never again!
*
Jack kissed the soft lips fervently. His kiss was returned in earnest and long, slim arms wrapped themselves around his waist as he settled his body on top of the other. Thus he sat up pulling his lover with him. With dexterous hands he unbuttoned his partner’s shirt and took off the cufflinks. Jack slowly brought a pale hand to his mouth, never breaking eye contact, and kissed every knuckle of every finger staying longer on the ring finger.
Slowly, he undressed his husband and he took off his own clothes before retaking his place on top of the leaner man, leaving kisses on the beautiful face.
Bright, blue eyes sparkled with joy and mischief at him as her leaned down to steal yet another kiss…
He woke up sweaty and aroused.
“Jack, are you alright?” Werth asked him from beside him. The younger man seemed sleepy and relaxed and Jack felt guilty for waking him up.
“Yes I’m fine. It was just a dream.”
“But you’re trembling. Do you want me to warm you up?” Jack’s husband asked trying to make offer sound seducing and failing due to a yawn.
Jack smiled and kissed Werth chastely on the lips.
“You warm me just by being here. Go back to sleep.” He pulled his robe on and went to the living room where he poured a glass of whiskey and sat on the large sofa.
There was nothing wrong, he tried to console himself. He just had an erotic dream about his husband. Nothing wrong about that. Only, if he was to be honest with himself, the man of his dream wasn’t Werth. Those dark blue eyes belonged to Ianto Jones.
Jack checked on Werth to find him sleeping peacefully as he himself should as well, but he sighed at went to his office as he was certain he wouldn’t be able to sleep. He went to his office to make a phone call. On the fourth ringing he heard the familiar voice answer.
“Hey John!” He said as a greeting.
“Jack! What a surprise. You’re the last person I was expecting to hear today… and so late in the evening.” John said to him adding his wished for a happy life for the newlyweds. “So where do I owe the honour of this call?” He concluded.
“Ianto.” Jack said firmly.
“Excuse me?”
“Werth’s twin brother? Ianto Jones? Tall, slim, pale, blue eyes, dark hair? You live with him!”
“I know who Ianto is, Jack. What about him?”
“Werth was waiting for him. He hoped that Ianto would come. Even in the last minute. But he didn’t.”
“Yes, well… Ianto wanted to come too, but, you know how things are, Jack…”
“No, I don’t. Why didn’t he come?”
After a short silence, John answered a little too brightly for Jack’s liking. “He’s into work too deep, Jack. If he wants to succeed he has to study hard, practice even harder. And there is an extra class on Saturdays, he cannot miss. I thought he and Werth had talked about it. Ianto wasn’t all too concentrating today either but it was only once. Imagine the lost time if he had come to Wales for the weekend…”
Jack was aware of the conversation between Werth and Ianto and the younger man’s reasons for not attending the wedding. Until Werth had informed him of the fact, Jack had been hoping not to see the younger Jones any time soon. Afterwards, his only desire was to see him, talk to Ianto.
That and get marry, of course.
“Yes, Werth told me. But he didn’t enjoy the day as he should have.” He said pouting even though John couldn’t see it.
“I’m sorry.” John didn’t sound as if he was actually sorry, but Jack didn’t know how to interpret it. So he didn’t.
‘’Not your fault.”
“How was the wedding?” John’s question took him by surprise. But that was the big event, wasn’t it?
“Great! Rose came. She’s got a new boyfriend, Mickey Smith.”
“Yes, I met him in London.”
“A bit daft if you ask me, but she likes him. John…”
“Yes?”
“How’s Ianto?” Both men sighed wondering what was in the other’s mind.
“He misses Wales, Jack, his family… Lisa. But he’s doing alright.” John wasn’t going to mention Ianto’s earlier breakdown. “As you had told me once, he’s just a kid who’s looking for his future and trying hard for it. So where to?”
“Huh?”
“Honeymoon. You will go on a honeymoon right?”
“Oh yes! Morocco, Casablanca.”
“Fantastic! I’m happy for you Jack, so happy that you found someone to love and want to share your life with.”
Jack nodded and lost track of the conversation after that. He had done a major mistake in choosing this time. He just couldn’t think the exact moment he had done it. He gulped the glass’s content in one go and got up after saying goodnight to John.
He went to his bedroom, took off his robe and naked as he was got under the blanket. Coldness crept inside him so he pulled Werth’s body and wrapped his arms around his body inhaling the smell he had learnt to recognize.
Before sleep claimed him Jack thought that it wasn’t the fresh sea-minty fragrance of his dream.
